With their roots in the Bristol club scene of the early ’80s, the members of Massive Attack originated trip-hop, one of the most influential sounds of the ’90s, combining the rhythmic urgency of hip-hop, the freewheeling samples of the DJ’s craft, soul-rich melodies, and dub-reggae’s hefty, intoxicating bottom end. Massive Attack were one of the most influential groups of their generation; their hypnotic sound set the pace for much of the dance music that emerged throughout the ‘90s, paving the way for such acclaimed artists as Portishead, Sneaker Pimps, Beth Orton, and tricky (himself a Massive Attack alumnus).
The group have released 5 studio albums to date and have sold over 11 million copies worldwide. They have racked up an impressive collection of awards in their time, including a Brit Award (Best British Dance Act), two MTV Europe Music Awards, and two Q Awards.
