SG Lewis has unveiled latest single ‘Meant To Be’, alongside details of the much-anticipated ‘Yours’ EP (released today via PMR/Virgin EMI, and impacting on October 7th). The ‘Yours’ EP – whose warm-up title track featured quickly-rising Raye – also includes breakout recent single ‘Holding Back’ (with Gallant): ‘Holding Back’ was playlisted at Radio 1, 1Xtra, saw Lewis surpass 20 million Spotify plays and be named iTunes and Apple Music’s New Artist Of the Week.
With ‘Meant To Be’ remixes to come from Ta-Ku, Fono and Salute, SG Lewis has also confirmed details today of his biggest headline show to date. He will headline London’s Koko on November 17th, with tickets on sale today (and further appearances confirmed at Manchester Warehouse Project).
‘Meant To Be’ is an appropriately-titled step forward for SG Lewis, marking the young songwriter, DJ and producer’s first proper claim to the additional role of singer. Having started the track in Los Angeles with one of his long-time heroes – Chad Hugo from The Neptunes – it took someone closer to home (label-mate Howard from Disclosure) to convince SG that now was the time to take the leap from behind the decks. “Howard was adamant that I should try and vocal it – something I hadn’t done fully on my own songs before, but had wanted to try for a while.” The result -‘Meant To Be’ – brims with confidence, coolly assimilating a love of classic disco into modern, soulful electronics.
‘Meant To Be’ brings together SG Lewis’ ‘Yours’ EP, a collection that pushes much of what he loves into new shapes. From the brooding, nocturnal R&B of the title track to the more upbeat, infectious ‘Holding Back’, it’s all a long way from Lewis’ modest musical beginnings: specifically, making beats in his bedroom as an undergrad in Liverpool, and starting out DJ’ing in the city’s notorious club Chibuku. Much to his surprise, post-club jam ‘Warm’ snowballed internationally, becoming the most Shazam’d song of the year across US TV and winning SG vocal fans from Pharrell Williams to Lorde (it’s now surpassed 10 million streams). The last year or so has seen SG steadily hone his craft, sell-out extensive shows worldwide, and stop at festivals including Coachella, Primavera and Glastonbury (he even founded his first club-night, ‘Parallels’, at Phonox). ‘Meant To Be’ is the sign of an artist and producer who finds himself in precisely the right place and time, in front of the mic and facing the future.
